Job Title: Sen. Manager: Storage & Backup Management

Position Reports to: Executive: IT Infrastructure Management

Division: DIST- Service Delivery

Location: Head Office, Pretoria

Job Purpose

To manage all aspects of SARS enterprise storage systems nationally, by maintaining and defining as needed all standards associated with the IT Infrastructure and ensures SARS storage and backup infrastructure is in compliance with all relevant audit requirements and work collaboratively with Senior leadership from across DIST and business.


  • Consult to business on technology solutions in the analysis and design of the ICT storage area network and backup infrastructure whilst ensuring 24/7 availability within all SARS business as usual platforms
  • Ensure that business requirements are clearly identified, prioritized and satisfied by appropriate technical and or business process solutions
  • Prepare project specifications for maintenance projects, ensure participation and provide guidance and advice in evaluation of proposals for specification compliance
  • Develop strong relationships with vendors, suppliers and consultants to ensure clear communication of technology strategies and standards, effective proven delivery of services and the successful achievement of the defined service level requirements
  • Oversee the negotiation and administration of vendors, consultant contracts and service agreements
  • Understand and keep track of trends in the market, evaluate new technologies and assess readiness of the organization to migrate to identified solutions that reduce cost, improve service delivery and boost effectiveness
  • Execute complex initiatives requiring the application of advanced IT Infrastructure knowledge, practices and procedures, along with creative insights in order to complete assignments successfully
  • Prepare plans for data management, development and installation according to present and future requirements and monitor all activities related to analysis and implement all data centre plans
  • Proactively identify, define and analyse organisational needs, provide advice on appropriate solutions that may meet the current and future requirements and ensure that SARS realise the Return on Investment (ROI) thereof
  • Ensure that the enterprise server and storage platforms align to hardware and software standards with a strong focus on system reliability and security


  • Implement governance, risk and compliance policy in own practice areas to identify and manage governance and risk exposure liability


  • Create a positive work climate & culture to energise employees & give meaning to work, minimise work disruption and maximise employee productivity
  • Develop & implement appropriate people capacity plans in line with delivery & efficiency targets, on budget & in partnership with specialised areas


  • Implement and monitor financial control, management of costs and corporate governance in area of accountability


  • Build strong relationships and develop service level agreements that promote SARS with internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage an integrated service excellence culture, which builds rewarding relationships and provides opportunity for feedback and exceptional service
  • Develop and ensure implementation of practices which builds service delivery excellence and encourages others to provide exceptional client service

Education and Experience

  • Honours / Postgraduate Diploma (NQF 8) or higher in Information Technology or related field with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in an ICT storage and backup infrastructure management environment


  • Degree / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) or higher in Information Technology or related field with a minimum of 12 years’ experience in an ICT storage and backup infrastructure management environment
  • 3-4 years’ experience at a management level
